TEST DRIVE MEME

There was an accident. The details are hazy and obscure, but it's still the first thing you remember. Maybe a car wreck — metal and broken glass everywhere, and the sirens and the screaming. Maybe your bike hit a rock and you careened uncontrollably off a mountain path. Maybe something less mundane, even impossible seems to have happened to you. You can't quite make out the details, not who was at fault or why. Try as you might, the chaos is all you can truly remember.

It's also the last thing you remember from before waking up.

When you open your eyes, the accident is gone. Instead, you're in a hospital bed, and the nursing staff greet you with cheerful smiles.

Don't worry, they tell you. You'll make a full recovery here. Where is here? Why, home in Wayward Pines, of course!

option one
WELCOME TO WAYWARD PINES

The hospital staff had seemed very friendly, but ultimately unhelpful when it came to answering your questions, insisting you shouldn't worry about such things, and that it was smarter to just rest until you'd fully recovered.

That was some time ago. You've since managed to leave the hospital – either via escape, or simply by waiting patiently and filling out paperwork until they finally agreed to release you. Now you've found yourself in the small but hearty town of Wayward Pines, Idaho. It's a charming little place, and the people there are all friendly enough, more than willing to greet you on the street, or give you directions if you need them.

Unless you're asking for directions out of town, of course.

Some will simply smile and give you a hearty pat on the shoulder and ask why you'd ever want to do a thing like that? Others will get quiet for a moment, and direct you to the nearest sign posted near the doorway of every building.

Don't bother taking the road, either. Whether you walk or get your hands on a vehicle, you won't get anywhere. The road simply takes you away from town for a short while before looping around and bringing you right back in.

There's no use questioning things, and it seems pretty useless to try to leave. So really, why not stay a while? Everyone's convinced that you'll find something to love in Wayward Pines.

(For the purposes of this test drive, you're welcome to handwave the existence of basically any local business or activity.)

option two
INTO THE WOODS

You've just heard a scream from the woods.

I mean, it could've been an animal. There's bound to be some kind of wildlife amongst the trees, right? But then again, it did sound awfully... human.

Though all of the locals nearby conceal a flinch at the sound, they'll assure you it's nothing, if you ask them. Why, you're probably just hearing things! (But with an anxious undertone of stop asking questions.) If you're curious, though, and brave enough to go see, they won't make any move to stop you from going into the wooded area surrounding the town.

The trees are tall, and their branches are thick enough to block out a significant amount of sunlight from breaking through the canopy, leaving the forest floor a little dimmer and cooler than the streets of town.

Whatever the source of the scream was, you won't be able to find it out here. An experienced hunter might notice some signs of a struggle, and a few faint boot prints, but they don't really seem to lead anywhere in particular.

What you will find, if you walk far enough, is a fence. A big one - at least 30 feet tall, made of metal and concrete. It goes on quite a ways in either direction as well; follow the wall far enough, and you'll see that it connects with the steep, sheer cliffs that surround the rest of Wayward Pines, effectively boxing the town in.

In actuality, you'll probably feel it before you see it. A full 500 yards from the wall, when it's hardly a shadowy smudge through the trees, you start to feel a little bit tired, a little bit weak. Trouble is, the closer you get, the weaker you feel - like the wall itself is sapping the strength out of you, and the closer you get, the worse it feels. Any powers you may have had grow weaker in kind as you make your way to the fence, but even ordinary humans will find their strength sapping away. By the time you're close enough to read the signs and to feel the crackle of electricity radiating from the thick wires criss-crossing the wall's metal surface, you're too weak to stand.

Do you crawl closer still and risk electrocution, or do you crawl away and assess the situation once you're far enough from the fence to be able to stand?

option three
FOURTH OF JULY

If there's one thing to be said for Wayward Pines it's the town's resilience and staunch refusal to give up on the image of a picturesque little town, and July 4th this year has the community putting it's best foot forward in this regard with its annual 4th of July picnic and fireworks spectacular.

To hear anyone (Linda) familiar with the town talk (complain), this year is a much more sedate affair than any of the years prior, but in a lot of ways today is a very good opportunity for people to reconnect with their neighbors; chat quietly at a table, share a recipe, play some catch, or argue with Jerry over the proper way too cook a burger. Jerry never listens, of course, but thankfully the whole event is a pot luck so there are plenty of other, far more edible options for those with a more... discerning palate.

The day passes pleasantly, and the night? The night brings the fireworks. A beautiful cascade of bright colors and lights in the sky. Sparklers are handed out like party favors while everyone is strongly encouraged to play safe by a long-suffering and weary looking sheriff. After all, the town has had quite enough excitement by this point, don't you think?

option four
ON THE NETWORK

Though it's not as high-tech as you might be used to (or hell, maybe you're ren faire and it's centuries beyond anything you've seen), Wayward Pines does in fact have a network to accommodate its citizens.

Go ahead, post a network post! Just note that the network currently has two basic functions. The first is audio-only and can be accessed from the telephones in each character's home. If an audio-based medium doesn't suit your needs (or aesthetics), be sure to take advantage of the Wayward Pines Message Board from your brand new laptop for the chance to communicate with your fellow townspeople!

( a few notes )

Welcome to our fifth test drive here in The Pines! Just one important thing to note:

Upon arrival in Wayward Pines, characters find themselves struggling to remember entirely who they were or where they came from. Memories return progressively over the next two weeks. You're welcome to play with this mechanic in any of these prompts, but it's definitely not mandatory! For more details on this temporary memory loss, see our FAQ.

[Jace would keep his word. It was more important now than it had ever been. He'd almost lost Alec. He would never make that mistake again.]

For being me. For leaving. For not listening. For not being there when you were hurting. You've never not been there for me. Even now when you're married and have a real home.

[Alec has always been the better half.]
angelic_archer: (Everything is weird)

[personal profile] angelic_archer 2017-06-25 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
You should never be sorry for being you.

[Maybe if he hadn't had to live for years, hiding who he was from his parents and the Clave, Alec wouldn't think that but now he knows that Jace has nothing to apologize for related to being himself.]

You were busy and in love. We drifted apart, but we're fixing that.

[Pretending to scowl at his parabatai, he gently elbows him in the side.]

It wouldn't be home without you and Izzy. I'm not going to let us be like other parabatai that lose each other because one of them gets married.

Ah, the good old bait an' switch. Guess I shoulda expected that.

[ He chuckles. Because really, no one actually has time to complain about avocado toast, let's be perfectly real here. And anyone that does have the time, probably doesn't have the ambition to actually change the status of avocado toast in people's lives. Especially not if they're running a gym.

(Although, it does make Blake wonder if Rumlow isn't pushing his own agenda. I mean, what's better to get a person into the gym than sugary breakfast cereals?)
]

Anyway, since you're askin', I'm just a beat cop. Like to be a detective some day, but there's only so much mystery to a place like this.

[ Ah ha ha... yep, only so much mystery they can talk about, at least. ]

Guess bein' a military man and workin' for the government, you'd get that.

[Nanako hasn't even made the connection yet that the arm she's grabbed isn't made of skin and bone like hers - a bit too distracted by what was happening to even register. Honestly, she knows not to talk to or approach strangers, now more than ever, but when you see someone that needs help, you help them! That's what her daddy and all her teachers tell her, too. And Nanako always (mostly) listens to the adults. She knows she can't really pull him up all the way, but if she can at least keep him from falling until someone arrives--

Oh! Stumbling a little when Jesse moves, Nanako gasps and looks at him like she doesn't believe what happened. Did...did she really do that? She's not quite sold on her strength being that good, but it at least deviates her panic somewhat. Her grip is still vice-like, just in case, but she's not yelling anymore. And now that the terror has ebbed, they can get a good look at each other. Nanako has her own little hospital gown, but hers covers a bit more, thankfully (and they let her keep her undergarments :|b). She looks in perfect health though - rosy cheeks, bright eyes, the works - so why was she here?]

Um...a-are you okay? Can you get up? [She makes a face at the cigar, wrinkling her nose at the smell, but doesn't say anything. Manners are important.] I won't let go, promise!!

[ Kate's lips pick up into a casual smile. She likes Jess' lack of a filter, that very trait probably having had done its part in influencing Kate a little herself over the years. ]

Yeah, sure. I mean, it's totally what our founding fathers fought for. [ She shrugs, waving her own sparkler. ] We can top it off with a feast of twenty hot dogs.

[ people do deserve it, Tink just hopes that this day is lighter than the last major event in this town. she has a knife in her bag in case something goes wrong, and where that instinct comes from is more real to her than her identity here. people grow cautious if there's suffering in their past, she's probably not the only one here with a plate of food and a weapon just in case.]

As far as I know, it's specific to - [ she pauses, aware of rules that have been in place and the fact that she might be breaking one. it's what she did as a fairy, safe to say she hasn't learned her lesson since then.] This country. I haven't experienced it myself, but I'm surprised they're celebrating.

[ the last thing anyone here wants is for the residents to declare their independence from the Pines.]

Personally, I'll never turn down a celebration, but everything here is a little less wonderful than they say it is, just about all of the time.

[Jesse stares for a moment. She doesn't look injured, or even sick. She looks like she should be running around doing whatever it is that kids do now, not stuck here with strange men crawling out of windows.

He notices her look rather quickly. It's a look he gets before from strangers when they stand a little too close to him and smell the tobacco on his clothes or breath. Normally he's more less inclined to really hide, or really do anything about it, but he is in a hospital...and she is a small child. It can't be good for her health to be near it. He takes the cigar from his mouth and quickly presses it against his metal bicep. It makes a strange hiss before the embers dim and fade. He places it behind his ear for later.]

Well, I'm fine now. Thank you, darlin'.

[He stands up, and carefully makes sure his backside is covered with his other hand around him to hold his gown shut.]

What are you doing here alone?

[This festival(??) is actually pretty nostalgic, it reminds Nanako a little too much of home, when she was taken out in a yukata with her family and her big bro's friends. Daddy won her a prize, and she got to eat cotton candy and watch the fire works. It's different, even the food is different, but the atmosphere is so like the one she remembers...

Only it's sort of bittersweet, too. Nanako is still 'lost', after all. She's been asking people if they've seen her father or brother, and no one's really been giving her a straight answer. She's a bit scared, worried, and...well, what's going to happen to her? She doesn't know where she is, where to go, or what to do. She is just a child after all! And even though everyone seems so happy, she's watching the fireworks with no excitement, and hangs her head and kicks her feet a few inches above the grass on a picnic table. Her belly is full, but her heart seems empty.]

Huh? [Looking up, Nanko startles at the glittering stick being offered to her.] Oh! Um...y-you don't want it? I can really have it?
okaerinasai: (Why do people die?)

[personal profile] okaerinasai 2017-06-27 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
[The hiss startles her, but no where near as much as how the cigar is put out. What is that?! Is that really real? Nanako stares, her mouth hanging open a bit, before she realizes and looks away awkwardly. Wow, that was pretty rude, wasn't it? She's curious as to what happened there, but she's got the common sense to not bring it up. Those things are when people lose their body parts, right? Prophetics or something. Nanako is sure a lot of veterans and stuff have to deal with those, or soldiers and officers that are in really bad accidents.

Darn if she's not curious as heck though, and it's obvious that she's itching to ask about it, and to get a closer look. Kids are curious by nature, and it actually moves like a real hand!! That's so cool?!

She steps back to give Jesse enough room to get inside again, but Nanako keeps her promise and doesn't let go until his feet are on solid ground, looking down a little nervously as she releases his arm to wrings her hands together.]

I'm looking for my dad... He and Big Bro are supposed to be here. [She remembers an accident, and being admitted to the hospital with her dad, so it makes sense to be here, but...the actual cause and nature of the accident is a blur. Or what her family was doing prior.] And, um...mmn... No one else knows where he is, either.

[Jace shook his head again. No. No.]

I never should have let anyone get between us. You haven't. And...I'm not in love with Clary.

[Just to be clear.]

I should have known. The way you kissed Magnus.

[It had been at a wedding. The details were still missing, but he knew it was a wedding by the way ALec was dressed. And the way Alec had kissed Magnus had made him smile. Alec rarely showed anyone else that kind of passion or intimacy.]
angelic_archer: (Why is everything weird?)

[personal profile] angelic_archer 2017-06-27 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
[For a few seconds, Alec can only stare at Jace. Every memory he has of his parabatai is of him being desperately in love with Clary.]

I thought you were.

[Which is an understatement but since they're not supposed to talk about the past and this would be a detailed conversation that someone would notice, Alec keeps the answer simple.]

What does the way I kiss Magnus have to do with you being in love with Clary?
wayfaring_stranger: (pic#10574523)

[personal profile] wayfaring_stranger 2017-06-27 04:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Nope. Not in love with Clary. Jace is shaking his head in denial. He had been. He had thought he was in love with her. But he can't be in love with his sister. He can't.]

It doesn't. I'm not. And you kissed Magnus at a wedding. I just didn't remember that it was your wedding.

[But they are married and they are happy. Very happy. So why does the thought of their happiness make Jace's chest ache?]

If you...or Magnus...if you decide you need your space back.

[Jace grabbed a piece of tri-tip to stuff into his mouth just to focus on something other than emotions he didn't know what to do with without a punching bag or a demon nearby.]
infligere: (Whatever)

[personal profile] infligere 2017-06-27 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, what can I say? I don't like being bored, and blowing someone's hair the wrong way usually gets a response. I just want to know my neighbours.

[If he were being honest, running a gym felt hollow at times, like he was made for bigger and better things. What those were, he had no idea, but he knew an itch when it felt it. He had caught himself staring into the horizon multiple times as if waiting for something, knowing it was out there if only he could reach it.

To pass the time, he tried to push people, to know how they ticked and reacted, to get under their skin. Only the best would have any chance of getting close in return he decided.]

Well, you're young and you seem to be good at convincing people down for drinking. I figure you'll do just fine rising in the ranks.

[He had seen some interesting wild behaviour of some of the residents here. He had been mentally filing those incidences away to consider in his oodles of spare time.]

Well, I follow a lot of rules in both places. It doesn't mean that the head on my shoulders is just for show. There's something about getting to know people... [Especially here where people were either as they claimed or so wildly different it was almost a shock to watch them try and fail to hide things.]

He has a burger in his left hand so his right can be free, just in case, but he hasn't stopped eating all evening. He's taking advantage of this properly catered event, even if he couldn't care less about the holiday itself. The last time there was free food it was all health garbage, and he has some standards.]

For all the fussing they'd already experienced between the two of them at this point — generally speaking, relatively minor, but in Wayward Pines, this kind of introduction is still a bit of an enigma — he can't help but get the impression they could be fast friends if circumstances allow. ]

Goes both ways, you know. People are bound to be interested in gettin' to know you back. So... dish.

I'm not sure how burgers are meant to be cooked, exactly, but it does seem to motivate lively discussion! [This reminds him. He eats his burger. It remains great??? He is becoming accustomed to the fact that this is likely because he hasn't previously had cause to eat meat at this quality before. No real complaints, honestly. The doneness of the beef isn't a consideration because it's beef. Like. The good parts. This warrants a happy eating face before he gets back to the important business of showing off.]

Mmm...best not. He might get on the food.

[Twirling his hand completely unnecessarily, he sends up a burst of blue magic, which comes down again as a sudden rush of tiny snowflakes that melt rapidly over the gently confused festive crowd. It's a very muted blizzard because he wants to do something impressive, not give partygoers frostbite in July.]

[ The burger parts all taste the same to her, really. The variety seems more based on the components of the burger itself? Which makes perfect sense, reminds her of making potions a little, but for your mouth. Well, for your mouth in a nice way instead of a boring mediciney way. ]

Well, that would ruin the burgers.

[ At the little shower of snowflakes, she shoves her bottle of lemonade into Anders' free hand and raises her own above her head, tosses out a similar burst of snow with the same degree of unnecessary flourishing. [The attendants were friendly. Things were quiet and peaceful. Everything was clean and shining. A faint thought said this good, normal. Yet Nothing felt right. Something deep in his bones screamed that this was off. The staff was too friendly, things were too peaceful and cleanly. How was that wrong? It didn't matter if he should have healed before leaving, he simply had to leave.

Gathering his things had been easy but making his way out was another entirely. Halls were intricate and his limbs didn't seem to want to slink him around corners and from shadows as effortlessly as he felt accustom. Why was he so tired? He couldn't recall ever being so sluggish and it was frustrating, to the point Altaïr has to borrow support from the wall as his shaking form trudges into an empty hall.

He doesn't make it much father, just about halfway down, before he's leaning against a window sill.
] Only for a moment... [The mumble falls from him as he clutches the bagged effects in his lap.] There is always a way out. [Only to find it.

Preferably without landing himself back in one of these rooms.

3 ; // Home Is Where the Roof Is

[Though trickling he remembers some things that ease his displacement here, things he longs for; the toll of bells, wind whipping past him. The feeling of height and flight. This gathering isn't as close to most of those things as Altaïr would like but the pop of fireworks and flash of color bring a level of comfort all the same. Better still is his view from atop a pavilion, up and away from the crowd.

While there are some children occasionally scattering away from the building in bursts of giggles there are few whispers about it from the adults, who don't seem to believe the small ones clamoring about the hooded man on the roof. Or how he accepts their "offerings" of snacks. So the assassin now lays on the roof, unintentionally full from his own hunger and curiosity of the items brought to him, trying to take comfort from the jovial sounds of the people around him.

At least until he hears someone else approach.
] You cannot keep bringing treats, [Altaïr almost sounds lethargic as he sits up with a small noise.] Surely you have better— [He trails, realizing it wasn't more children with food, and stares for a few moments before clearing his throat gently.] Hello.

From what he had gathered - and it was all very confusing - there had been another him before he had arrived, which seemed impossible except for how weird everyone acted in this place.
